Anything that lets light penetrate can be used in a skylight or window

  •  Glass:

Tempered glass is always used on the exterior of a skylight; this is a safety glass such as the side window in your car. When tempered glass breaks it shatters into many tiny pieces, reducing the chances of getting cut.

Laminate glass is also considered a safety glass and is similar to the glass in your car windshield. This glass will crack but won’t fall out as it has a “plastic” film that holds it together. Laminate helps block a portion of the UV rays that cause fading and radian t heat.

Impact glass is used in areas such as Florida where they receive high winds.

  • Acrylic:

Acrylic or Plexiglas is a material that is typically heated and then “blown” into a dome shape. It is an inexpensive glazing material and is used frequently by most skylight manufacturers. Colors are typically clear, bronze or white.

  • Polycarbonate:

Polycarbonate is a material similar to acrylic except that it is a stronger material. It is typically utilized in a triple walled panel manufactured by Polygal or Lexan.

  • Fiberglass:

Normally used on commercial applications and manufactured into a sandwich style panel with grid lines. Usually overall dimension is 2, 3/4”
